Forms of advertising on the Internet

The Internet offers a large number of ways in which you can increase traffic to your website. Some forms of advertising on the Internet are free, for others you have to pay. However, you can often get a much larger and more stable number of new visitors with the free ones. For some, you can pay a decent package of money, and yet it will not be reflected in your traffic as you imagined.

Let’s look at the traffic sources that (if used correctly) in most cases bring the highest number of visitors to your website:

  • Google
  • Bing
  • Social networks

And guess what? None of the above-mentioned sources of traffic costs you a penny. Now we are not talking about PPC (pay per click advertising), but about natural search results.

If you cleverly optimize your website for search engines, you’ll get far more visitors to your website’s search results than any paid ad would bring. The basis of optimization is the choice of keywords , if you have selected keywords, just include them in your optimization.

Social networks are a trend today and many people use social networks almost every day. If you can reach customers in these places, you have a huge advantage. A perfect and invaluable feature of social networks is that if other users of these social networks follow you, they will be informed directly on their profile about every step you take. Are you introducing a new product to the offer? Are you planning a sale? Or seasonal discounts? Just one click and all the users who follow you will know.

What are the forms of advertising on the Internet?

1. SEM (search engine marketing)

Gain visitors using search engines such as Google, List, Center, Yahoo, MSN and more. By optimizing your website for search engines, you try to get the best position in search results for certain key phrases.

The goal is to be on the first page of search results (this is the position where the most money “flies”) – answer for yourself how often you click through to other pages when searching for a term. You will usually find a quality website on the first page. A very small number of visitors go through other sites. Therefore, in the case of strong competition, it is advantageous to use the power of the long-tail keyword (a more specific phrase on which to focus your optimization).

2. SMM (social media marketing)

Your contact with the customer takes place on various social networks. As we said in the introduction, social networks offer you a great way to communicate with the customer. One click is all it takes for the customer to follow you and then receive every piece of information you want to tell them directly in their profile.

However, you must always think about the question that every visitor asks: “why should I watch this page?”. Try to offer visitors a bonus, a free product, or a discount in return for becoming your fan on Facebook, for example. Always think about giving your customers some improvement, doing them a service, or helping them in any other way.

3. Collaboration with relatives – friendly websites

If you have existing clients or partners in your area of business, try to make the most of your online collaboration for both. Link each other to your site and try to provide potential customers with as much information as possible on the issue. Exchanging links with your partners and clients can be very effective, and in addition you do a counter-service, so you don’t have to pay each other anything.

For example, if you run a wholesale business with some products, link your website to links to your customers. You will advertise to them if someone is interested in this product and does not know where to get it. Your subscribers will provide you with valued backlinks.

It will also be more pleasant for your visitors to have the environment of your website if they get all the necessary information there, including collection points, stores and the like.

4. Advertising banners

If you have a friendly website, you can also arrange for the exchange of advertising banners (images that will be redirected to your website when a visitor clicks on). In most cases, however, placing a banner on a site is a paid affair.

When you see banner ads on some sites, these are usually:

  • Advertising banners with a flat rate payment – you pay for the placement of the banner on the page in the form of, for example, a monthly fee. It is often possible to subscribe to advertising for a longer period at a discount.
  • Advertising banners when you pay for clicks on your banner. In this case, you pay every time someone clicks on your banner. The price of such clicks varies, depending on the traffic and requirements of a particular site.
  • Advertising banners within the affiliate program (see below – affiliate programs).

Whatever the form of banner advertising, if you are interested in trying this way to promote your website, carefully consider whether visitors to that website are your target audience. Find out about the traffic statistics of these websites and calculate the conditions under which advertising on such websites would be relevant to you.

5. In-text advertising

This is an ad that appears in the body of the website itself. Certain words are highlighted in the text (usually colored green and underlined twice), and if you hover over the word, an advertising message will appear. Typically, advertising is based on pay-per-click advertising.

6. PPC advertising

Pay per click is very common. You can see this either in the search results, where you’ll see and highlight the “Ads” boxes in the top positions, and in the right pane for Google. If a visitor clicks on your ad, you pay a fee. You can limit your budget for PPC ads – for example, if you spend $ 50, your ad will no longer run. Pricing varies depending on the keywords or phrases you want to appear below.

In addition, your ad can be placed on any site that is opted in to the affiliate program with the provider. In this case, the provider of this ad (Google, and others) evaluates itself what ads to place on that website (based on relevance). If someone accesses your site from such websites, then you pay the PPC advertising provider and he pays a small commission to the owner / operator of the website.

7. Viral marketing

It’s like advertising, where you create something advertising that people will share with each other. It can be, for example, a funny advertising video (remember the Christmas advertisement on Coca cola?), Or an information message (such as an e-book), a free advertising product and the like. Due to the interesting content, people will voluntarily forward to each other the given advertising message, product or whatever you create. In some cases, such advertising is spreading at an incredible rate.

8. PR articles

Articles that you write in a PR catalog. These articles are written for backlinks. Writing PR articles is mentioned as one of the effective forms of link building. You simply write a short article in which you place links to your website and then publish it in a PR system. Surely you remember how we talked about a problem called duplicate content. If you want to write PR articles, don’t do this by writing one article and copying it into all the PR catalogs you find on the Internet. Remember that search engines don’t like duplicate content at all. Each such article should be essentially original.

9. Blogs

Whether it’s a blog you run for your business or someone else’s blog. Such a link can bring you many visitors. If you have a blog focused on solving a problem, you build traffic and then redirect it to your products, visitors are very well targeted and your conversions should occur more.

You can also arrange for someone who runs their own blog with a related topic to write a review about you or your product. In return, you can offer to publish a link to his website. This way, the blog can gain new readers and your business new customers. It’s a process where you and the blogger can just get it.

10. Affiliate programs

If possible in your field, affiliate programs are a very effective marketing technique. Just look at how many companies are involved in offering various insurance products, sales mediation and similar matters.

In the world of the Internet, affiliate programs are at least equally (if not more) beneficial to all parties (provider, partner and customer). Why? It is simple:

  • The provider will receive a number of orders that he would not otherwise have received, because the customers that the partner brings to him would not otherwise have to know about him at all. In addition, they do not have to invest anything in this particular promotion, the partner will take care of all the marketing. Therefore, it pays to take away from his profit and give this difference to the partner in the form of a commission.
  • In this way, the partner can get interesting commissions from the sale. At the same time, they do not have to invest their funds in the development or production of a given product. He only takes care of marketing, he uses his authority and contacts to do so.
  • The customer gets the product for exactly the same price as the original company, but also gets a lot of useful information based on experience from a partner who recommends this product because he is satisfied with it.

An affiliate program can be a very effective way of promoting yourself on the Internet, it just depends on how handy you are and how you manage to implement your own affiliate program.

11. Backlinks, link exchange

Backlinks are very important for your website. The number and quality of links to your website testifies to their quality. If you are with your site in a very competitive environment, your website is perfectly optimized just like your competitor’s website, then only backlinks can decide. The most valuable are backlinks from sites that are considered authority by search engines and are from a related or the same field as your own website.

In addition, you also need to note that backlinks are not just a point in your favor in the eyes of search engines. If you have backlinks to websites that deal with related issues and these sites already have their community built (traffic), a large number of visitors and potential customers may come to you from such sites.

12. Internet auction portals

You can sell your products directly to end customers on various online auction portals. You can offer anything from small products, cars, real estate to various services.

The biggest advantage of auction portals is that they already have a very solid base in terms of traffic. The subject of your work on one of such portals may not only be sales, but also to increase awareness of your business. People will know what you are selling, where you are from, and they can become long-term loyal customers over time.

The largest online auction portal is Ebay. Ebay has hundreds of millions of users. If you have never tried selling on Ebay, in one of the later articles I am preparing for you tips and tricks on how to use Ebay for your business as effectively as possible.

13. Internet catalogs

An Internet catalog is a website that contains links and information about companies divided into categories according to their field of activity and usually also according to their local location. People often use catalogs to find a company that provides the products or services they need near them.

There are a huge number of catalogs on the Internet. Some are free, others for a fee. If you are going to register for a paid catalog, carefully consider its potential benefits for your business. It is really useless to pay for a placement in a catalog that will not bring you new visitors in sufficient numbers.

Registering to the catalogs also makes it easy to get backlinks. However, the quality of such a backlink depends on the quality of the catalog itself (or how good it is considered by search engines).

14. E-mailing

E-mailing is considered one of the most effective forms of advertising on the Internet. It is a direct communication between you and your customers. If your main clients are your regular customers, you can run e-mailing easily from any e-mail account. Your customers are usually waiting for your new products. You do not need a double opt-in from such a client about his interest in your e-mails.

However, if you plan to send your e-mails publicly (such as me on this site), you must use an e-mailing service. When subscribing to e-mails in this way, the customer must voluntarily enter his e-mail address and then confirm his interest by clicking on the link in the e-mail, which is automatically sent to him after logging in. Such confirmation is a necessity under the Spam Protection Act.

You can use e-mails to send your visitors specific current offers, news, or even informational messages (such as on these pages you can sign up for a website optimization e-mail course).

These are 14 basic forms of advertising, of course there are other ways to increase your traffic, or various combinations of the above forms of advertising. We will talk about them later, for the time being I wish you a nice weekend, full of a successful increase in traffic to your website.
